This author’s opinion is that the term “Artificial Intelligence” is dangerous, it’s misused, overused, and invites us to blindly rely on the programming of ‘AI’ creators. Next time you are talking to a customer service chat bot, consider if you would be comfortable with that same technology replacing your doctor, or screening your emergency call to the police. Currently, true artificial intelligence does not exist. The current danger is in how much faith is placed in what we refer to as AI, despite its severe limitations. To further the example of the customer service bot, they may have been programmed to emulate the responses expected of them, but it does not hold true intelligence and the creativity required to work outside of that – a relatively minor inconvenience for most of us currently, but a much greater issue for vulnerable users, and when the same technology is used for essential services, the consequences could be disastrous.
